HUUC Cleaning Bee

HUUC Cleaning Bee

CLEANING BEE
Saturday September 11

If you could change the appearance of one place at HUUC’s building, where would
you start? If you had help, would you start sooner? At some point in our association with
this wonderful congregation, each of us has entered the building as a visitor or newcomer of
sorts. Think of those first impressions you had of the physical surroundings and ask yourself
if some of the unsightly areas have improved. Most likely the areas that have not changed
are still turning off recent visitors. Let’s help one another change that.

On Saturday September 11 our building will not get a total makeover, but we can
expect something more than cleaning and tidying up. I have found cleaning bees to be good
for connecting with people about the use of the building. You find out why things get put out
of place and how some areas seem to collect problems. When you talk to someone else
with the same ideas about improving a specific area, the seed for real improvement is sown.

Please look for the sign up sheet in the social hall. If you are a committee
chairperson, HUUC project coordinator or someone with a personal investment in some
property left at the building, I hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity. In
addition to getting some help in arranging your area to your satisfaction, you will have the
chance to educate the rest of us regarding the space utilized for your project or program.
Those of you who are currently involved in HUUC projects and programs, but are unable to
attend the bee are strongly advised to contact me regarding anything inside the church, as
we will make on the spot decisions regarding the disposal of property.
Let’s meet at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday September 11 and plan to leave by noon.

Jim Stier, Building and Grounds Chairman

Annual Summer Picnic

The HUUC Youth has spent the summer at Bunker School’s Community Garden learning the spirituality of seed to feed. working in the dirt, and the importance of community. Here they are using vegetables they grew in the garden to make salsa for the summer picnic.

HUUC Summer programming offers a unique opportunity for children aged preschool through high school to become involved in a community gardening project while exploring their own spirituality through yoga, meditation and connecting with nature.

What:

Bunker’s “From Seed to Feed” project is a community garden intended to teach urban children about food production while offering urban families an opportunity to “give some to get some” – harvesting food in exchange for their effort. HUUC kids will determine how their share is used – to be donated to needy families, prepared for a feast for the congregation, prepared for homeless families we house or taken home to their own families.

Who:

Kids aged preschool through high school and adult mentors, gardeners, yoga instructors and friends. HUUC congregation members are encouraged to volunteer.

Where:

Bunker Middle School (EXCEPT FOR RAINY DAYS)

1-1/2 miles from HUUC, take Denmark St. off from Laketon Ave in Lakeside.

When:

On rainy days, children will meet at HUUC. If there is no rain, children are to be dropped off and picked up at the Bunker Middle School Community Garden for their program which will run from 10:15 – 12:30.
